If you don't like what you made, you can delete him, but you keep the slot, and can make a new different Freeform character. For a 1-time payment, you can have 1 Freeform character slot.permanently. You CAN buy a Freeform Slot WITHOUT a subscription. Sorry for late reply, to agree with my /CO/mrades, there is a Lifetime subscription that is USD299 but goes on sale sometimes (happened twice this year) at USD199. If you want to support Cryptic by buying something (thank you btw), I would suggest waiting for a half-price sale on a Freeform slot (at US$25, it's a much better return on investment). The Unleashed and Automaton are at least free.

The challenge is that the Soldier AT is probably the best free option already, so it's hard to recommend your next step.
If you're already good with a Soldier, though, the Unleashed doesn't add a lot more than a 2nd toon to farm with (as certain missions are 1 character per day only). The Unleashed: it's good to learn the game the 1st playthrough, still useful in some of the endgame content, but limited by the fact that it's melee. Again, compared to the Unleashed, at least the Invincible is ranged. You'll find it extremely sluggish compared to the Soldier. It has trouble tanking in that it doesn't grab aggro away (as CO strongly leans towards DPS for aggro), it's not survivable enough to tank well, and it has major energy problems. It's not a lot of money, but you may well suffer buyers remorse. The Invicible: not recommended especially since it's a paid AT. Compared to the Unleashed, its one advantage is that it's ranged, as a lot of endgame content is very unfriendly towards melee. Despite having more hit points and a self-heal in theory, it's not more survivable than a Soldier with Smoke Grenade in practice. Its role was a gimmick to get subscribers to play it to unlock a new power, Rocket Punch. The Automaton: not great, but at least it's free. 1st, great choice on the Soldier, just a humble reminder you want to get Smoke Grenade (to lose threat if you grab aggro) at level 17 if you haven't already.
I was a Silver player for years and switched to a Lifetime Subscription a few months ago, but I still play ATs just to keep those experiences to share.
